On Saturday, June 4, 2011, as part of reunion weekend, the Colby community gathered in Lorimer Chapel to celebrate the significant impact Charlie had on the lives of the College and all those he touched while here. The program included a jazz band and remarks by former students and colleagues.

In his Reunion 2011 State of the College Address, President Bro Adams described Colby making the most of “a moment of tremendous opportunity,” strategically hiring new teaching faculty and launching several important construction projects. He described the record admissions season, the College’s finances, and aspirations to be need-blind, and answered questions from the audience. (49 minutes)

Richard Whitmore Jr., head basketball coach at Colby from 1970 to 2011, stepped down with a 637-341 win-loss record after taking Colby teams to postseason tournaments 27 times over his 41-year career. On May 20, 2011, he was honored during Commencement Weekend. Introduced by President William D. Adams, Whitmore addressed the annual Faculty-Trustee Dinner. (33 minutes)

Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Parker J. Beverage, Colby’s Dean of Admissions from 1985 to 2011, enrolled about 12,000 students at Colby. On May 20, 2011, he was honored during Commencement Weekend on his impending retirement at the end of June. Introduced by President William D. Adams, Beverage addressed the annual Faculty-Trustee Dinner. (19 minutes)

2011 Commencement Speaker Address by Rajiv Shah, who leads the agency responsible for supplying U.S. aid to the developing world, focused on internationalism at Colby and on graduates’ impact on the global community. “From Ethiopia to Bangkok, Uganda to Nepal, Colby grads are at the forefront of helping serve those in greatest need,” he said.

This short video covers the story of the student-led organization, Students for Education Reform at Colby, who seek to close the achievement gap in public education. This video briefly visits some of the members and the events they attend. Their events outline SFER’s missions of increasing awareness of educational issues, fostering understanding of the school systems among the students, and academically engaging with students in public schools.

English Professor Peter Harris has his students teach poetry in the schools. “There’s something else that happens when you try to pass on the knowledge,” he tells insideColby’s Emily Fleming ’12 . (Run Time: 4:47.)
